PSLV-C62 Mission Ends in Failure, Yet KID Capsule Transmits Data

Post by : Meena Hassan

Accomplishing great things often requires a child-like tenacity and unwavering spirit. Proving this, the KID capsule, a small payload carried by the PSLV-C62 launch, embodied resilience.

Although the PSLV mission ultimately failed, with initial beliefs that all onboard satellites—inclusive of a vital surveillance satellite—were lost, the KID capsule astonished everyone by successfully separating from the rocket and transmitting crucial data back to Earth.

This success is particularly noteworthy for the company behind KID, which is dedicated to improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of space travel and cargo returns. Their goal is to develop capsules that can safely return cargo from space, capable of withstanding intense heat and pressure upon re-entry.

KID functioned as a prototype and technology demonstrator for their upcoming vehicle, which is designed to bring back up to 120 kilograms of payload from orbit.

The PSLV-C62 rocket launched successfully; however, complications emerged during the third stage. Disturbances and deviations from its planned trajectory were observed as the rocket's strap-on motors operated, leading to the mission's failure and the loss of most payloads.

Included among the lost satellites was an essential earth observation satellite, intended to aid defense operations by monitoring enemy activities and troop movements. Other onboard satellites comprised a tanker satellite, innovations by private entities, as well as student-developed payloads.

Despite the failure of the PSLV mission, the KID capsule’s successful operation provides a hopeful outlook for future space missions and cargo retrieval efforts.
