Cebu Landfill Disaster: One Fatality and Many Missing Amid Rescue Efforts

Post by : Meena Hassan

A significant tragedy unfolded at a waste segregation site in Cebu City when a towering mound of refuse unexpectedly fell, trapping workers under substantial debris. This catastrophic incident has been confirmed to result in one death, numerous injuries, and multiple individuals still unaccounted for, as authorities report.

The unfortunate collapse took place at a landfill facility located in the Binaliw area, prompting emergency service teams to tirelessly work throughout the night in a bid to rescue those trapped. At least eight individuals have been successfully extricated, though a female worker later succumbed to her injuries en route to the hospital. Several others are currently receiving medical assistance for their injuries.

Confusion has arisen regarding the actual number of individuals missing, with police originally indicating that at least 27 workers were trapped, while city officials later suggested the count might be even larger. The precise details are still being clarified as rescue efforts progress amid poor communication conditions hampering information flow from the scene.

Mayor Nestor Archival reassured the public of the mobilization of all emergency units, adhering to stringent safety protocols. He reiterated the commitment of the city administration to transparency, accountability, and aiding the families affected by this disaster.

The landfill, managed by a private waste disposal company, processes approximately 1,000 tons of waste daily and employs over 100 staff members. Numerous administrative buildings at the site were reported to have been toppled by the heavy trash collapse, which is estimated to have risen to the height of a four-storey building.

Weather conditions were reported to be dry at the time of the incident, and investigations into the cause of the collapse are underway. An emergency meeting with city officials and landfill operators has been arranged to review the circumstances and outline subsequent actions.

Efforts from rescue teams persist as they sift through the rubble, with families anxiously awaiting news about their loved ones.
