US military operations have led to the death of at least five individuals in an attack on boats suspected of drug trafficking. Search efforts are currently in progress to find any possible survivors.
On Wednesday, US military officials confirmed that strikes were executed on several vessels believed to operate along known drug-smuggling routes. However, the precise location of these attacks was not disclosed, as similar operations have recently occurred in both the Caribbean Sea and the eastern Pacific.
Military representatives claimed that the targeted boats were navigating together and were suspected of engaging in narcotics transfer just before the strikes took place. No independent verification of these claims was provided.
Reports indicate that three fatalities occurred during the first strike on one vessel. Following this, individuals aboard the other boats reportedly entered the water prior to subsequent strikes leading to the sinking of those vessels. A later operation resulted in two additional deaths, totaling five casualties.
In response, US authorities directed the Coast Guard to commence search and rescue operations. Aircraft and surrounding vessels have been deployed to assess the waters, as there are indications that some individuals may still be unaccounted for.
The decision to launch rescue operations has sparked scrutiny, given prior instances where survivors of past strikes were killed in follow-up attacks. These events have led to legal and political discussions in the US, with some legislators questioning the legality of these actions, while the government defends them as valid under existing security protocols.
This latest incident, which has taken place since early September, is part of a growing trend in maritime strikes associated with US anti-drug efforts. Authorities present the campaign as an essential escalation to combat the influx of illegal drugs into the US, viewing it as a broader military confrontation with international drug syndicates.
Additionally, the United States has augmented its military presence in the area, mobilizing thousands of troops amid escalating pressure on Venezuela’s regime. Washington accuses the Venezuelan government of participating in drug trafficking, a claim that Caracas vehemently denies, arguing that the US aims to destabilize Venezuela to seize its abundant oil resources.
Earlier this week, US officials mentioned a strike on land within Venezuela associated with drug operations, marking a significant intensification in their efforts. They later clarified that the land attack was not directly executed by US forces, although covert operations in the region have reportedly received authorization.
