Intense Christmas Storm Raises Flood Alerts Across LA

Intense Christmas Storm Raises Flood Alerts Across LA

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Los Angeles and surrounding Southern California regions are under flash flood warnings as a powerful Christmas storm engulfs the area, characterized by heavy rain, strong winds, and a heightened risk of mudslides.

This storm has been fueled by an atmospheric river, also known as the Pineapple Express, which transports warm, moisture-rich air from near Hawaii, resulting in rainfall amounts typically experienced over months occurring within days.

Emergency Measures Implemented

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency across several counties, including Los Angeles, to facilitate rapid emergency responses and ensure resource availability as conditions worsen.

The National Weather Service has issued urgent warnings, predicting life-threatening flash floods, heavy snowfall in the mountains, and fierce winds to persist through Christmas.

“Serious dangers to life and property are present,” the agency remarked, advising residents to stay vigilant and limit travel.

Rainfall, Outages, and Traffic Disruptions

The initial phase of intense precipitation began late Tuesday, toppling trees, flooding roads, and causing traffic delays across Los Angeles. Rainfall peaked on Wednesday, bringing down power lines and leaving numerous residents without electricity.

As of Christmas Eve, around 80,000 customers were still experiencing outages statewide, with some localities receiving nearly 10 inches (25.4 cm) of rain from the first storm.

Weather experts caution that while the first storm shifted away from Los Angeles late Wednesday, another wave of precipitation is anticipated to arrive overnight and last through Christmas Day.

Increased Mudslide Threat

Areas adjacent to recent wildfire burn zones are particularly at risk. Neighborhoods such as Pacific Palisades and Malibu are under scrutiny as the impacted landscapes struggle to absorb the heavy rainfall, resulting in a significant risk of mudslides and debris flows.

Transportation authorities have reported numerous road closures throughout Southern California due to floods, fallen trees, and mud flows, with emergency crews responding to various weather-related incidents.

Evacuations and Shelter Establishments

The American Red Cross has set up shelters in several areas after evacuation orders were issued to some residents. Authorities are urging those in high-risk zones to relocate to safer locations ahead of escalating conditions.

Meteorologists are predicting flooding, rockslides, and mudslides could persist from Wednesday afternoon through Friday, particularly in elevated terrains.

Travel Chaos as Residents Alter Plans

Despite numerous warnings, many locals are out shopping and preparing for Christmas, while others are rethinking their travel plans.

One resident mentioned deciding to stay home after several emergency notifications highlighted the unsafe nighttime driving conditions. Some holiday get-togethers continued as scheduled, while others were scaled down due to the weather.

Strong Winds and Mountainous Snow Heighten Risks

Alongside flooding, forecasters have predicted wind gusts reaching up to 130 km/h in the mountainous regions and deserts of Los Angeles County. In the Sierra Nevada, over a foot of snow has already fallen, with forecasts predicting up to five feet prior to the storm's conclusion.

Officials are continuously encouraging residents to stay informed, avoid flooded areas, and minimize travel during the holiday season amid this perilous Christmas storm.
