Gas Blowout at ONGC Well Causes Panic in Andhra Village

Post by : Meena Hassan

A significant gas blowout at an ONGC oil well in Andhra Pradesh's Konaseema district resulted in chaos on Monday. The incident unfolded while repair operations were ongoing at the site.

The well, situated in Irusumanda village of the Razole mandal, had temporarily ceased operations, and a workover rig was employed for repairs. During these activities, a sudden blowout unleashed a considerable volume of gas integrated with crude oil, shooting it high into the atmosphere.

The flame ignited as soon as the gas leaked, alarming residents in adjacent villages with flames reaching upwards. Thick smoke and gas clouds enveloped Irusumanda and surrounding areas, creating conditions similar to dense fog and significantly lowering visibility.

In response, local authorities promptly broadcasted safety instructions via loudspeakers, advising residents in nearby villages to refrain from using electricity or igniting stoves to avert any risk of further incidents.

Panchayat officials and district representatives instructed villagers to evacuate as a safety measure. Many residents hurriedly left their homes, taking their livestock and vital belongings to safer areas amidst rising tensions.

ONGC's emergency response team immediately deployed to the scene to manage the gas leak and control the fire. The affected area has been secured, and ongoing observations are in place to ensure no further escalation occurs.

Senior administrators from the district, alongside ONGC engineers, are actively supervising the safety measures and containment actions at the site.

ONGC plays a critical role in the Krishna-Godavari delta, extracting natural gas and crude oil from various onshore and offshore assets connected by a vast network of pipelines, ensuring that processed gas is supplied to national systems.

Officials confirmed that emergency protocols will continue until the situation is fully under control.
