Google Develops TorchTPU to Boost AI Chip Support for PyTorch

Google Develops TorchTPU to Boost AI Chip Support for PyTorch

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Alphabet-owned Google is working on a new project to improve its own artificial intelligence chips so they can run PyTorch software smoothly. PyTorch is one of the most popular tools used by developers around the world to build and run AI models. By improving PyTorch support on its chips, Google aims to reduce Nvidia’s strong control over the global AI chip market.

Google wants its Tensor Processing Units, or TPUs, to become a strong alternative to Nvidia’s graphics processing units. These chips are already an important part of Google Cloud’s business, and the company hopes this move will help show investors that its heavy spending on AI is delivering real results. However, Google understands that powerful hardware alone is not enough to attract customers.

To solve this problem, Google has launched an internal initiative called TorchTPU. The goal of this project is to make TPUs fully compatible with PyTorch and easier for developers to use. This would remove one of the biggest challenges stopping developers from switching to Google’s chips. Google is also considering making parts of this software open source to encourage faster adoption.

Most AI developers do not write low-level code for specific chips. Instead, they rely on frameworks like PyTorch, which provide ready-made tools that simplify AI development. Nvidia has spent many years optimising its chips to work extremely well with PyTorch. Google, on the other hand, has mainly focused on a different system called Jax, which its own teams use, along with a compiler named XLA. This difference has made it harder for outside developers to use Google’s chips efficiently.

In recent years, Google has started selling more TPUs to external customers through Google Cloud. Earlier, most of these chips were used only inside the company. As global demand for AI has grown, Google has increased production and sales of TPUs. Still, many developers prefer Nvidia chips because they work seamlessly with PyTorch and require less extra effort.

If TorchTPU is successful, it could make it much easier and cheaper for companies to switch from Nvidia chips to Google’s TPUs. Nvidia’s dominance is not just due to hardware, but also its CUDA software system, which is deeply linked with PyTorch and widely used for training large AI models.

To speed up progress, Google is now working closely with Meta, the company that supports and develops PyTorch. The two companies are also discussing deals that would allow Meta to use more TPUs. Meta sees value in this effort as it could reduce costs, lower dependence on Nvidia, and give it more flexibility in building its AI systems.
