Tensions escalated in Caracas late Monday night following the sound of gunfire near the Miraflores presidential palace, mere days after the dramatic capture of former president Nicolás Maduro by U.S. forces that has dramatically shifted the nation's political dynamics.
Around 8:00 PM local time, unidentified drones were spotted flying over the heavily secured palace grounds, prompting security personnel in the area to respond by firing shots into the air as a defensive action against any potential aerial risk. Authorities later confirmed that the situation was swiftly managed and that no immediate threat existed to the interim government or significant state infrastructures.
This incident emerged at a particularly critical juncture as Delcy Rodríguez, a leading figure from the previous regime, had just been officially sworn in as the interim president after Maduro’s ousting. The timing of the gunfire coinciding with the leadership transition only heightened public anxiety amid Venezuela's ongoing political instability and concern over safety.
Residents from the surrounding areas reported hearing short but intense bursts of gunfire lasting under a minute. One local, who chose to remain unnamed for safety, expressed fear, mistaking the noise for an aerial assault. Many individuals instinctively looked upwards, anticipating military aircraft, but instead observed two red lights—which they believed to be drones—hovering above.
As the incident unfolded, residents in nearby apartments rushed to their windows and balconies to get a clearer view. Although the gunfire triggered alarm, witnesses noted that the intensity was comparatively less than the military action over the weekend that led to Maduro's removal, describing Monday's incident as brief and relatively controlled.
Videos later circulated depicting tracer rounds illuminating the sky above the palace, amidst a significant presence of security forces. Numerous armed personnel gathered in the vicinity of the Miraflores complex to bolster security and secure nearby streets.
In spite of public concerns, the government’s communications ministry has yet to issue an official statement addressing the origins of the drones or the nature of the perceived threat. This delay in communication has left many questions lingering as Caracas endures a tense atmosphere while monitoring further developments in Venezuela's fluid political landscape.
