Surging H3N2 Flu Cases Prompt Hospitalizations, Canadians Advised to Exercise Caution

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The H3N2 influenza strain is leading to a marked surge in hospitalizations in the United States, which has health officials advising Canadians to stay alert as a rise in cases is anticipated in the near future.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that 7.5 million Americans this flu season have been affected, with over 81,000 needing hospitalization. Several regions in the U.S. have noted record hospitalization rates, indicating a rough flu season ahead.

Data from December 20 shows that flu tests in the U.S. are returning positive results at a rate of 25.6%—up sharply from 15.7% the week before and just 9% two weeks prior. Within that week, 19,053 individuals were hospitalized due to flu-related complications. Tragically, five children lost their lives due to influenza in this timeframe.

The most common strain this year is the H3N2 subclade K, known for causing more severe illness.

Canadian medical experts, including Dr. Fahad Razak from St. Michael's Hospital and the University of Toronto, warn that Canada is likely to experience a similar, severe flu season. Dr. Razak remarked, “The data strongly suggests that we’re facing a particularly harsh flu season here as well.”

He highlighted recent flu trends across Europe, the U.S., Australia, and Japan, calling it one of the most severe flu seasons seen in recent memory. The high frequency of cross-border travel between Canada and the U.S., especially during the holidays, provides a conducive environment for rapid flu spread.

“It’s nearly impossible to prevent the spread when infection rates are elevated on either side of our shared border,” Dr. Razak added.

According to the latest report from Health Canada, flu-related hospitalizations have nearly doubled within a week, with infection rates climbing by almost 30%. During the week ending December 13, 27.7% of flu tests showed positive results, equating to 11,646 new flu cases. Additional data covering the festive season will be released shortly.

Dr. Razak accentuated the necessity of vaccination, particularly as children return to school. “If your child hasn’t been vaccinated yet, now is the best time to do so. Vaccination remains our strongest defense against severe illness,” he advocated.

With infection rates climbing and hospital admissions increasing, experts indicate that prompt vaccination and ongoing caution are vital to mitigating the flu’s impact this season.
