Hindu Man Set on Fire in Bangladesh as Minority Violence Surges

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a disturbing incident on December 31, Khokon Das, a 50-year-old Hindu man, was viciously attacked and set aflame in Bangladesh’s Shariatpur district. The assault took place as he was returning home, where a mob armed with sharp objects brutally assaulted him before igniting the flames. This incident is yet another in a troubling pattern of violence directed at Hindu minorities in the region.

This attack marks the fourth against Hindus in just a matter of weeks. On December 24, a 29-year-old named Amrit Mondal was lynched in the Hossaindanga area of Kalimohar Union. Previously, on December 18, Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old Hindu, was murdered in Bhaluka Upazila, after being falsely accused of blasphemy by a coworker. He was subsequently assaulted by a mob, whose actions included hanging and burning his body.

Such incidents have raised alarm over the protection of religious minorities within Bangladesh. The frequency of attacks against Hindus, Christians, Buddhists, and others has surged, particularly under the current interim government led by Yunus. Rights organizations worldwide have condemned the violence.

The Indian government has recently voiced serious concerns regarding the ongoing aggression against minorities in Bangladesh and is actively monitoring the situation to support regional stability. The rising violence has incited anger both domestically and internationally, underscoring the need for immediate protective action for at-risk communities.
