Arkansas Gas Station Delivers $1.8 Billion Powerball Windfall

Arkansas Gas Station Delivers $1.8 Billion Powerball Windfall

Post by : Bianca Haleem

In a thrilling turn of events, a lucky lottery player in Arkansas has become a multi-millionaire after purchasing a single Powerball ticket that won more than $1.8 billion, making it the second-largest lottery jackpot in US history.

The winning ticket, which matched all five white balls plus the Powerball, was drawn on Christmas Eve, ending a lengthy dry spell without a jackpot winner in this popular game.

Ticket Purchased at a Cabot Gas Station

The fortunate ticket was bought at a Murphy USA gas station located in Cabot, a small community northeast of Little Rock, boasting a population close to 27,000. Given its proximity to a busy interstate, it's possible that the winner could be from out of town.

Alejandra Barron, a spokesperson for Murphy USA, mentioned that their locations experienced a surge of customers on Christmas Eve, many of whom specifically came to get Powerball tickets. This isn’t the first stroke of luck for the chain, as a Murphy Express store in Sugar Land, Texas, sold an $800 million Mega Millions ticket in 2024.

Community Buzz Surrounds the Winner

Local Mayor Ken Kincade expressed the excitement buzzing through Cabot as residents speculate on the identity of the winner.

“Everyone's chatting about it,” Kincade shared. “It’s trending all over social media. People are making guesses about who the winner could be.”

While there is hope that the winner is a local, the mayor recognizes that the strategic location of the gas station could mean that the winner is just a passing traveler.

Next Steps for the Jackpot Winner

As per the Arkansas Scholarship Lottery guidelines, the winner has a 180-day window to come forward and claim their prize. Arkansas law permits winners of large prizes to maintain confidentiality for up to three years, although public officials and their close relatives are limited to six months of anonymity.

Tax implications will be considerable, with Arkansas's highest individual income tax rate standing at 3.9%. If the winner opts for a lump-sum payout of about $834.9 million, state taxes alone could exceed $32 million. Any outstanding debts such as overdue taxes, child support, or legal judgments may also be deducted from the ultimate winnings.

A Memorable Christmas Eve Win

This event signifies the first winning Powerball ticket drawn on Christmas Eve since 2011. Historically, the game has seen Christmas Day winners four times, with the latest occurrence in 2013.

With odds of 1 in 292.2 million, Powerball is engineered for enormous jackpots. In 2015, changes made in the game rules allowed for progressively larger prizes while still providing better chances for smaller victories.

Each Powerball ticket costs $2 and is available in 45 US states, in addition to Washington, DC, Puerto Rico, and the US Virgin Islands.

Winning Numbers

The winning numbers from the recent Christmas Eve draw were 04, 25, 31, 52, and 59, with Powerball number 19.

As Arkansas anticipates, the mystery winner is yet to decide how and when to make their claim on one of the largest lottery prizes in United States history.
