Astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian to set foot on the International Space Station (ISS), returned to Earth safely. He flew on the Axiom‑4 (Ax‑4) mission alongside three international crew members. At 15:01 IST (09:31 GMT) on Monday, the spacecraft splashed down off the coast of San Diego, California. The event was broadcast live, marking the successful conclusion of a significant mission to space.

Mission Crew and Arrival at the ISS

The Ax‑4 crew included:

  • Former NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson (mission leader)
  • Group Captain Shukla, piloting the spacecraft
  • Slawosz Uznanski‑Wisniewski from Poland
  • Tibor Kapu from Hungary

They docked with the ISS on 26 June after a smooth launch. Their mission aimed to advance scientific research and strengthen international cooperation in space.

Significance of Shukla’s Mission

Group Captain Shukla made history as the first Indian ever to board the ISS. Although Rakesh Sharma flew in 1984 aboard a Soviet spacecraft, Shukla’s mission comes a step further with his stay aboard the orbiting laboratory. His journey follows nearly four decades after Sharma, marking a new milestone in India’s space exploration.

Axiom Space: Private Company, Global Collaboration

The Ax‑4 mission was managed by Axiom Space, a Houston-based private firm. This commercial flight was a collaboration involving NASA, ISRO (India’s space agency), ESA (European Space Agency), and SpaceX. The partnership reflects the growing role of private companies in global space missions.

Undocking and Descent to Earth

On Monday, the Ax‑4 crew entered their spacecraft at ISS and closed the hatches. The undocking process was carried out smoothly and broadcast live. Over the next 22 hours, the crew returned to Earth, and a sonic boom announced their atmospheric entry. The spacecraft splashed down near San Diego, and a recovery vessel safely picked up the crew. They were later flown back to land by helicopter.

Shukla’s Emotional Farewell Address

Prior to departure, Group Captain Shukla addressed viewers from the ISS. He spoke about India’s future in space:

“It has been an incredible journey… the journey of our human space mission is very long and difficult. But if we are determined, even the stars are attainable.”

He paid tribute to Rakesh Sharma’s famous quote from the song “Sare jahan se achcha,” saying,

“From space, today’s India looks ambitious…the journey continues.”

A Mission Extended and Full of Research

Although designed as a two-week stay, the Ax‑4 team remained aboard the ISS a few days longer. During this time, they conducted 60 scientific experiments, including seven designed by ISRO. These experiments focused on biology, physical sciences, and Earth observation, and are expected to contribute to ISRO’s plans for future missions, including Gaganyaan, India’s first human spaceflight mission planned for 2027.

ISRO Investment and Future Plans

ISRO invested around ₹500 crore (USD 59 million) in Shukla’s seat and training for the Ax‑4 mission. The astronaut’s experience aboard the ISS gives India practical knowledge and validation for its own human space program. ISRO has laid out ambitious plans, including launching its Gaganyaan mission in 2027, starting its own space station by 2035, and sending an astronaut to the Moon by 2040.

Personal Journey of Group Captain Shukla

Born on 10 October 1985 in Lucknow, Shukla joined the Indian Air Force as a fighter pilot in 2006. He has more than 2,000 hours of flying experience on aircraft including MiGs, Sukhois, Dorniers, and Hawks. Describing his year of training as “nothing short of transformative,” Shukla said he carried “hopes and dreams of a billion hearts” on his historic mission.

Backup for Gaganyaan

Shukla is one of four Indian Air Force officers shortlisted as potential crew for the upcoming Gaganyaan mission. His success aboard Ax‑4 strengthens India’s position as it prepares for domestic human spaceflight, validating both training and mission readiness for future national launches.

India’s Growing Role in Human Spaceflight

Shukla’s mission and ISRO’s investments mark pivotal steps in India’s journey to human space exploration. The astronaut’s firsthand experience in ISS operations provides valuable insight for designing habitats, life-support systems, and crew training for Gaganyaan. Future missions, like a dedicated Indian space station by 2035, become more feasible with this knowledge base.

A Message of Inspiration for India

During his farewell, Shukla emphasized unity and ambition:

“India looked better than the rest of the world… from space, today’s India looks ambitious… confident… proud.”

His words referenced Rakesh Sharma’s legacy, while expressing hope for a new wave of space exploration driven by modern India’s capabilities and vision.

Recovery and Return Plans

After splashdown, naval vessels quickly retrieved the crew. They were flown to land by helicopter and are expected to undergo medical checks. Following quarantine and recovery, they’ll return to their home countries. Public celebrations in India and across the GCC are expected to mark Shukla’s return.

Legacy and What Comes Next

Shukla’s mission achieves importance beyond personal success: it offers inspiration and validation for ISRO’s future programs. The astronaut’s work on experiments aboard ISS will feed into designs for Gaganyaan and future Indian space structures. His success sets the stage for India’s next generation of astronauts and space missions.
