Indian-Origin Individual Detained for Placing Fake Bomb at Singapore Church

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In Singapore, a 26-year-old individual of Indian heritage has been apprehended for placing a fake bomb inside a church, triggering widespread alarm and the cancellation of all services for the day.

The incident occurred early Sunday at St Joseph’s Church, located in the Upper Bukit Timah area, a prominent residential district. The suspect has been identified as Kokulananthan Mohan.

Authorities reported that the suspicious object was discovered inside the church around 7:11 am. In response, church officials swiftly halted all services to ensure the safety of attendees.

Police documentation revealed that three cardboard rolls had been placed within the premises, filled with small pebbles. Red wires protruded from these rolls, secured tightly with black and yellow tape, making it resemble an explosive device.

Investigators concluded that the fake bomb was intended to instill fear, leading individuals to believe it could detonate. Officers confirmed that the object posed no real threat and could not explode.

The Singapore Police indicated preliminary findings suggest the individual acted independently, with no indications linking the incident to religious motivations or terrorism.

Following his arrest, Kokulananthan appeared in court on Monday, where a judge mandated a three-week observation period for mental health assessments. He is scheduled to return to the court on January 12.

In court, the defendant explained his unusual behavior was a result of sleep deprivation due to night shifts. The judge encouraged him to discuss this matter with medical professionals during his evaluation.

If convicted, he faces severe penalties, including potential imprisonment of up to 10 years, substantial fines, or both, under Singapore’s legal framework.

This unsettling incident has sparked fear among congregants and heightened safety concerns. The police have reiterated that fake threats, which can incite panic, will be treated as serious offenses.
