Tragic Death of Indian-Origin Man After Prolonged Wait in Canadian ER

Post by : Meena Hassan

A 44-year-old man of Indian descent tragically died of suspected cardiac arrest after an extensive wait at a hospital emergency room in Edmonton, Canada, which has raised important concerns regarding healthcare timely responses.

Prashant Sreekumar, a father of three, was admitted on December 22 due to excruciating chest pain he experienced at work. A client drove him to the emergency department, where he was triaged and directed to await treatment.

His family reported that Prashant suffered greatly and repeatedly informed the medical staff about his intolerable pain. His father, Kumar Sreekumar, arrived shortly after and recounted how unbearable his son’s pain was.

The medical team performed an electrocardiogram (ECG) to evaluate his heart status. Although they communicated that the ECG results were normal, Prashant was still instructed to stay in the waiting area.

As time elapsed, his condition deteriorated. Reports indicated that his blood pressure soared, and he was given Tylenol for pain relief. Nonetheless, he did not receive immediate medical intervention, remaining in the emergency room for upwards of eight hours.

Eventually, Prashant was called into a treatment area. However, just after taking a seat, he stood, clutched his chest, and collapsed.

Despite the urgent response from hospital personnel who attempted resuscitation, his life could not be saved, and he was pronounced dead from what appeared to be cardiac arrest.

Prashant is survived by his wife and three young children, aged three, ten, and fourteen.

The hospital’s healthcare organization extended condolences to the grieving family and confirmed that the incident is currently under review by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. Officials emphasized that patient safety is paramount but have refrained from commenting on specific case details during the ongoing assessment.

This tragedy has reignited discussions on emergency room wait times and the overall effectiveness of emergency service systems throughout Canada.
