Meta has announced new safety measures for teenagers on Instagram, limiting the content they can view to PG-13 by default. Teen users will no longer be able to adjust these settings without parental permission. This ensures that photos, videos, and posts are suitable for viewers under 18, aligning with content typically seen in PG-13 movies.
What PG-13 Restrictions Include
The new PG-13 restrictions block content featuring sex, drugs, dangerous stunts, strong language, and other risky behaviors. Meta emphasized that the update also hides posts promoting marijuana paraphernalia or encouraging harmful actions. The goal is to create a safer and more controlled environment for young Instagram users.
Teen Accounts Automatically Restricted
Any user under 18 who signs up for Instagram is automatically assigned a teen account with these content limitations. Teen accounts are private by default, have usage restrictions, and filter out sensitive posts, such as those promoting cosmetic procedures. Parents or guardians must explicitly grant permission for teens to opt out of these settings.
Additional Parental Controls
Meta is introducing even stricter settings that parents can enable for their children. These controls allow parents to manage what their teens can see and interact with on Instagram. The company stated that these measures are part of its ongoing commitment to protecting younger users from potentially harmful online content.
Addressing Past Concerns
The move comes amid growing criticism that Instagram and other social media platforms expose children to harmful content. Previous reports indicated that teen accounts were sometimes recommended inappropriate sexual content and posts about self-harm, body image issues, or suicide. Meta hopes these new restrictions will prevent teens from encountering content that could negatively impact their mental health.
Company Commitment to Teen Safety
Meta highlighted that it has already made commitments to shield young users from inappropriate content, particularly posts related to self-harm, eating disorders, and suicide. However, the company acknowledges that past filtering systems were imperfect and that the new PG-13 default, combined with parental controls, represents its most comprehensive teen safety update to date.
The initiative aims to provide a safer and healthier online experience for teenagers, balancing freedom of exploration with appropriate protections. By enforcing PG-13 standards and allowing parents more oversight, Meta seeks to reduce risks while keeping Instagram accessible and enjoyable for young users.
