As large wildfires continued to blaze on Sunday, hundreds of firefighters remained actively engaged across Portugal, Greece, and Spain. Emergency teams raced against time to contain various infernos, receiving additional international aid targeted at Portugal, where a significant fire has persisted for over three days.
To bolster firefighting efforts, both Spain and Italy dispatched extra resources to assist Portuguese authorities in managing the rapidly advancing flames.
In northern Greece, officials urged residents from parts of Thessaloniki, the nation’s second-largest city, to remain indoors due to toxic smoke originating from a recycling facility that caught fire, fueled by a nearby wildfire.
Authorities recommended keeping windows and doors closed to minimize exposure to the harmful smoke.
Another major wildfire ignited on Sunday afternoon west of Athens, putting additional strain on emergency response teams.
According to the fire department, 210 firefighters were dispatched to the Mandra area, where the blaze was consuming pine forests. Their efforts were bolstered by volunteers, specialized teams, and 29 aircraft, including helicopters and water-dumping planes.
Firefighters strove to control the flames before nightfall, as aerial operations cannot carry on after darkness falls.
In central Portugal, emergency crews persisted in combating a major wildfire that erupted in the Vouzela region on Thursday.
According to the Civil Protection authority, over 1,200 firefighters, along with nearly 400 vehicles and 15 aircraft, were engaged in efforts to suppress the fire. The European Union’s Copernicus satellite data indicated that the wildfire had scorched roughly 12,000 hectares (30,000 acres) by Sunday.
The European Union's Civil Protection and Humanitarian Aid department confirmed that international reinforcement has been mobilized to aid Portugal in its firefighting campaigns. Spain contributed 120 firefighters and 45 vehicles on Friday, with three firefighting aircraft from both Spain and Italy also rendered to assist in containing the extensive wildfire.
