During a joint press conference in Jerusalem, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, alongside Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, expressed their awareness of recent Iranian military drills. However, details on these exercises were not disclosed by Netanyahu.
Reports from Iranian state media revealed missile maneuvers happening across multiple cities in Iran. This marks the second occurrence of such drills in quick succession, highlighting Iran's commitment to advancing its ballistic missile capabilities.
For years, Western nations have identified Iran’s missile program as a notable threat to Middle Eastern stability. These missiles are perceived not just as conventional military assets but also as prospective delivery systems for nuclear warheads, should Iran pursue nuclear armament. Tehran, however, refutes any intentions to develop nuclear weapons, asserting its entitlement to peaceful nuclear purposes.
In recent years, Israel, Greece, and Cyprus have intensified their collaboration due to shared concerns regarding Turkey's increased clout in the eastern Mediterranean. This partnership has bolstered security and economic ties among them.
Netanyahu pointed out that Israel's “significant achievements” during the 12-day conflict with Iran this June have not shifted the fundamental expectations that both Israel and the U.S. have regarding Tehran. A primary demand remains the reduction of Iran’s uranium enrichment levels, crucial for nuclear arms development.
Ahead of his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, Netanyahu indicated that their dialogue will center on these expectations, while emphasizing that Israel does not wish to escalate tensions with Iran. The objective is to promote “stability, prosperity, and peace” throughout the region.
In discussions beyond Iran, Netanyahu also aims to address the next phase of Trump’s Gaza initiative and tackle threats from Hezbollah, the militant group based in Lebanon.
The three leaders have committed to enhancing their security collaboration and unveiled plans for a key infrastructure project. This initiative seeks to create a connection from India to Europe through the Middle East using maritime and rail routes, which President Christodoulides referred to as a “southeastern gateway” aiding connectivity between Europe and the Middle East.
Furthermore, plans are underway to establish an undersea power cable that will link their electricity networks to those of Europe and the Arabian Peninsula, fostering energy collaboration.
Greek Prime Minister Mitsotakis noted Greece's emergence as a significant energy center in southeastern Europe, especially concerning liquefied natural gas, reiterating that interconnection projects are crucial for all three nations.
Post-conference, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen remarked to Reuters that the trilateral meeting holds substantial significance at a time when certain countries are perceived to be undermining regional stability, although he refrained from naming specific countries.
