Profile of Jonathan Ross, ICE Officer in Minneapolis Incident

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The agent involved in the shooting of a woman in Minneapolis is identified as Jonathan Ross, a veteran of the Iraq War and a dedicated officer with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Reports state that Ross shot Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother, on Wednesday while she attempted to escape federal agents. The FBI is currently probing the matter due to questions about the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

Who Is Jonathan Ross?

At 43, Jonathan Ross boasts nearly two decades in law enforcement. Key highlights from his career include:

  • Deployed to Iraq between 2004 and 2005 as part of the Indiana National Guard

  • Served as a machine gunner in a combat patrol

  • Joined the US Border Patrol in 2007, stationed in El Paso, Texas

  • Acted as a field intelligence officer, focusing on drug trafficking and human smuggling

  • Started his role as an ICE deportation officer in Minnesota in 2015

  • Involved in fugitive operations aimed at high-profile suspects

  • Collaborated with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force as a team leader

  • A trained firearms instructor, SWAT member, and active shooter training facilitator

  • Fluent in Spanish and attended the Border Patrol academy in New Mexico

Previous Incident: Dragged by a Suspect’s Vehicle

Last June, Ross sustained severe injuries during an arrest operation in Bloomington, Minnesota.

Details from that event include:

  • Ross and FBI agents attempted to apprehend Roberto Munoz-Guatemala, an illegal resident

  • The suspect disregarded police signals

  • Ross intercepted the vehicle, identifying himself as law enforcement

  • While trying to unlock the door, Ross's arm became entrapped

  • The suspect fled, dragging Ross almost a football field

  • Despite using a Taser, the suspect continued to escape

  • Ross required numerous stitches for his injuries

Munoz-Guatemala later faced charges and was found guilty of assaulting a federal officer.

Details of the Minneapolis Shooting

While federal officials have not officially named the involved agent in the shooting of Renee Good, Secretary of Homeland Security Kristi Noem acknowledged Ross's previous experience of being dragged by a vehicle during an operation.

Authorities assert that Ross discharged his weapon believing Good was posing a threat. However, video evidence has ignited public scrutiny, resulting in calls for legal action.

The FBI is reviewing the incident, with local Minnesota authorities expressing interest in their own investigation.

Government Response

Vice President JD Vance voiced support for the officer, commending his long-term service without directly naming him.

“This is a dedicated man who has put his life on the line for many years and has faced grave dangers while serving,” Vance remarked.

The Department of Homeland Security refrained from confirming anything regarding Ross’s identity due to safety issues. A representative noted that he is part of ICE's specialized response team, which requires rigorous training.

“He responded in accordance with his training,” asserted DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin. “His life has been dedicated to serving the nation.”

What Happens Next

Efforts to reach Ross have yet to yield success. As investigations proceed, this incident has sparked significant national discourse on federal policing practices and the use of force.
