Justice Department Faces Delay in Epstein File Review

Justice Department Faces Delay in Epstein File Review

Post by : Meena Hassan

The U.S. Justice Department has disclosed that it has 5.2 million pages of documentation regarding Jeffrey Epstein that require examination. To manage this vast volume, 400 lawyers from multiple offices will be tasked with this effort, which is expected to continue into late January. Consequently, the release of these documents will be delayed well beyond the December 19 deadline mandated by Congress.

These files are related to ongoing criminal investigations concerning Epstein, a deceased financier and convicted sex offender who was notably associated with former President Donald Trump during the 1990s. The review process involves legal professionals from the Criminal Division, National Security Division, FBI, and the U.S. Attorney's Office based in Manhattan.

The review is slated to take place between January 5 and 23, with each lawyer expected to contribute three to five hours daily, scrutinizing approximately 1,000 documents per day. To facilitate this work, the Justice Department is offering telework options and awards for time off as incentives.

Recently, the department announced the discovery of more than one million additional documents potentially associated with Epstein, amplifying the need for thorough examination and redaction to safeguard victims.

Despite the law necessitating transparency regarding Epstein-related documents, ongoing delays and extensive redactions have led to frustration, igniting further controversy. This bipartisan legislation was introduced to ensure the release of these files by the original date of December 19.

Jeffrey Epstein was convicted in 2008 for trafficking a minor for sexual purposes and was facing additional sex trafficking charges prior to his death in 2019, which was ruled a suicide. President Trump has stated that his relationship with Epstein ended in the mid-2000s and that he was unaware of Epstein's illicit actions.

The Justice Department is diligently working to expedite the review and release of the files; however, the magnitude of this task will likely extend the timeline further.
