At the Grand Egyptian Museum, an incredible historical journey begins as the colossal cedarwood boat of King Khufu is being assembled in front of visitors. This significant archaeological find, belonging to the Pharaoh known for constructing the Great Pyramid, is now on display.
On Tuesday, museum conservators initiated the complex task of reconstructing the 42-meter long vessel, carefully fitting together 1,650 wooden parts as spectators watched from the main exhibition hall. This is one of two boats unearthed over seventy years ago near Khufu’s pyramid.
Issa Zeidan, the head of restoration at the museum, indicated that the assembly process is projected to take about four years. Each fragment undergoes detailed analysis, cleaning, and attachment using cutting-edge conservation methods aimed at preserving the integrity of the 4,500-year-old wood.
The completed boat will be showcased alongside its restored counterpart, which has been a display feature for several years and is celebrated as one of ancient Egypt’s most outstanding artifacts. Both vessels were found in sealed pits in 1954 on the southern side of the Great Pyramid of Giza, a renowned Wonder of the Ancient World.
Tourism and Antiquities Minister Sherif Fathy, present at the project’s launch, termed the occasion historic. He emphasized the restoration as a pivotal heritage undertaking of the 21st century, showcasing Egypt’s dedication to conserving its ancient heritage for a worldwide audience.
Scholarly debates continue regarding the boats' intended purpose, with theories suggesting they may have been used in the king’s funerary rites or symbolically prepared for his passage in the afterlife alongside the sun god Ra.
The assembly project is set within the $1 billion museum complex that opened last month adjacent to the pyramids outside Cairo. Lauded as the largest archaeological museum in the world, it holds nearly 50,000 artifacts, including the treasure trove of King Tutankhamun.
Egyptian officials anticipate that initiatives like the live restoration of Khufu’s boat will attract millions of tourists, enhance cultural tourism, and provide essential support for the national economy, while granting the public an unparalleled glimpse into history as it unfolds.
