North Korea’s supreme leader, Kim Jong Un, has announced a decisive plan to elevate the production of missiles and artillery shells, emphasizing a strengthened focus on the nation’s military capabilities. This initiative includes directives for the establishment of new manufacturing facilities to cater to the increasing demands of North Korea’s armed forces.
During recent assessments of munitions factories, Kim underlined the importance of missile and artillery production in fortifying the country’s defense policies. He urged these plants to gear up for a bustling year, stressing the need to enhance production capacity in response to military requirements.
In a remarkable visit to a shipyard, Kim examined the progress of a sizable, 8,700-ton nuclear-powered submarine designed to fire surface-to-air missiles. This advances North Korea's naval strength significantly. Images from the visit featured the submarine's dark red hull within an assembly building, marking the first clear visuals released this year. Analysts observing the submarine's layout suggest it is nearly operational and equipped with a nuclear reactor.
During his inspection, Kim cautioned that South Korea’s ambitions to develop its own nuclear submarines would exacerbate regional tensions, branding these initiatives as a direct threat to North Korea’s security. This warning follows South Korea’s president seeking backing from the United States for nuclear submarine technology, stirring concerns on the Korean Peninsula.
In addition to overseeing factory operations and the submarine inspection, Kim supervised a test launch of newly developed high-altitude, long-range anti-air missiles over the Sea of Japan. These tests are part of North Korea’s ongoing mission to modernize its weapon systems. Kim proclaimed that new modernization strategies and production plans will be shared at the upcoming Korean Workers Party congress early next year.
Experts interpret these developments as a reflection of North Korea’s strategy to bolster its precision-strike capabilities, intensifying pressure on both the United States and South Korea. These missile tests and production boosts may also tie into plans for exporting advanced weaponry to Russia.
Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine almost four years ago, the military relationship between Pyongyang and Moscow has strengthened significantly. North Korea has reportedly provided Russia with troops, artillery shells, missiles, and rocket systems under a mutual defense agreement between Kim Jong Un and President Vladimir Putin. In exchange, Russia has offered North Korea financial support, military technology, and essential resources like food and energy.
Experts also believe North Korea may pursue further advanced military technology from Russia, including capabilities related to nuclear-powered submarines and fighter jets, thereby deepening their strategic cooperation.
