Kim Ju Ae Marks Milestone Visit, Signifying Potential Heir to North Korea

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Kim Jong Un’s daughter, Kim Ju Ae, made her debut public visit to North Korea’s revered Kumsusan Palace of the Sun on New Year’s Day. Analysts view this pivotal occurrence as a sign of her growing stature within the ranks of North Korea’s ruling class and her potential emergence as her father’s successor.

Images broadcasted by North Korean media on January 1 displayed the approximately 13-year-old Kim Ju Ae at the forefront alongside her parents, as they paid deep respects at the mausoleum which holds the preserved bodies of her grandfather, Kim Jong Il, and great-grandfather, Kim Il Sung, underscoring the historical legitimacy of North Korea’s leadership.

Cheong Seong-Chang from South Korea's Sejong Institute stressed the significance of her visit, labeling it a strategic action ahead of the forthcoming Workers’ Party congress. Typically, Kim Jong Un commemorates major state occasions with visits to the mausoleum, reinforcing the lineage of his leadership.

The Workers’ Party congress takes place once every five years and is anticipated to determine new policy directions and reorganize pivotal officials. Although a specific date hasn’t been revealed, South Korean intelligence anticipates it will be in January or February. Speculation is mounting that Kim Ju Ae might be named to a significant party position, potentially taking on the role of first secretary—the party's second-highest ranking—although some experts advise caution, citing her young age and the likelihood that her initial duties might be limited to lower roles.

Since her public debut in late 2022, Kim Ju Ae has been seen attending various high-profile events with her father, including military parades and missile tests, and an official trip to Beijing in September 2024. Their strong bond was highlighted during the recent New Year celebrations, where she affectionately kissed Kim Jong Un on the cheek.

While opinions about her readiness for leadership vary among analysts, South Korea’s intelligence agency perceives Kim Ju Ae as the likely candidate for North Korea's leadership role, hinting at a momentous transition within the country's patriarchal power dynamics.
