Lebanon's Military Declares Full Control Over Southern Armaments

Post by : Saif Al-Najjar

The Lebanese military has proclaimed it has effectively established state authority over weapons in southern Lebanon, describing this achievement as “substantial and concrete.” This announcement represents a crucial development for Lebanon, which has historically faced challenges from armed factions operating independently of the government.

As reported by the military, security personnel have expanded their jurisdiction throughout most of southern Lebanon, aside from regions still occupied by Israeli forces. The military confirmed that its initiative to eliminate non-state weaponry from the area was accomplished by the deadline it had projected for the year's end.

Southern Lebanon has remained a contentious region for many years, marked by recurring confrontations with Israel and the presence of various armed groups. A ceasefire reached between Israel and Lebanon in 2024 concluded over a year of hostilities, with one pivotal clause stipulating that only the official Lebanese security forces would have authorization to bear arms in the southern area.

While the military statement refrained from explicitly naming Hezbollah, it is widely interpreted as referencing the influential group that has engaged in prolonged conflicts with Israel and wields considerable power in segments of Lebanon. A source within Lebanese security indicated that the military’s pronouncement suggests no entity will be permitted to initiate attacks from southern Lebanon.

Nonetheless, the military acknowledged ongoing obstacles. Efforts are still underway to clear unexploded ordnance, dismantle tunnels, and secure all territories completely. These threats continue to endanger both civilians and military personnel.

Lebanon has faced mounting pressure from the United States and Israel to ensure that all weaponry is under governmental control. Lebanese officials worry that failing to meet this expectation could provoke renewed and broader Israeli military actions in a nation already grappling with economic struggles and damaged infrastructure.

Israel and Lebanon have levied accusations against each other for breaching the 2024 ceasefire, underlining the precarious state of affairs. Nonetheless, the military’s declaration indicates that Lebanon is attempting to reinforce its sovereignty and avert future disputes along its southern frontier.

For numerous citizens in Lebanon, the military's reveal brings a sense of cautious optimism. Greater state authority could foster enhanced stability and security in a region plagued by years of turmoil. Ultimately, enduring peace will hinge on sustained collaboration, meticulous law enforcement, and regional tranquility.
