Doctors Decide Against Surgery for Mahathir’s Hip Fracture at 100

Post by : Meena Hassan

Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has been advised not to undergo surgery following a hip fracture, primarily due to his age. This information was conveyed by his son, Mukhriz Mahathir, in a video shared on Wednesday.

The 100-year-old statesman was admitted to the National Heart Institute (IJN) on Tuesday morning after a fall during his routine exercise. Subsequent medical assessments confirmed the hip fracture. However, the medical team deemed surgery too risky, given his advanced years.

Mukhriz mentioned that instead of opting for surgery, his father will be under rigorous medical observation and is anticipated to stay hospitalized for about two to three weeks for recovery and rehabilitation.

Sufi Yusoff, Mahathir’s press secretary, confirmed that the former prime minister remained stable and conscious during his hospital transfer.

In recent years, Mahathir has faced multiple hospitalizations, including a visit last July due to exhaustion after a celebration marking his centennial birthday. Prior treatments included care for a respiratory infection in October 2024, adding to his extensive medical history, which features heart surgeries from 1989 and 2007.

Despite health concerns and his age, Mahathir remains a pivotal figure in Malaysian politics. Known for his tenacity, he continues to engage with national issues and has recently aimed at unifying opposition factions against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The ongoing rivalry between Mahathir and Anwar, stemming from differing political views and leadership styles, has defined Malaysia’s political narrative for decades and continues to shape discussions within the country's diverse society.

Mahathir, recognized as Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister, held office for 22 years during his initial term from 1981 to 2003. His leadership is noted for significant economic growth and persistent debates surrounding governance, power centralization, and corruption allegations.
