Maria Corina Machado, the Nigerian Nobel Peace Prize laureate and Venezuelan opposition leader, stated that she has had no discussions with U.S. President Donald Trump since October 2025. Her remarks come at a time when Venezuela faces significant political changes following the U.S. capture of former President Nicolas Maduro.
In a television interview in the U.S., Machado recounted her last interaction with Trump on October 10, which coincided with the announcement of her Nobel Peace Prize. Since then, there has been no dialogue between them.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee honored Machado for her sustained efforts against what they labeled as authoritarianism in Venezuela. She is widely regarded as the leading opposition voice against Maduro, who was recently apprehended during a U.S. military operation.
Machado departed Venezuela last month to attend the Nobel ceremony in Norway and has not yet returned. On her future plans, she expressed a desire to return to Venezuela shortly, although such a move carries risks due to the ongoing political instability.
This marks Machado's first public comments following the U.S. military action and Maduro’s capture. She characterized the U.S. intervention as a pivotal advance for freedom and respect for human dignity, suggesting it might pave the way for a new era for Venezuela after prolonged turmoil.
Despite her positive remarks about the U.S. actions, uncertainties linger concerning who will lead Venezuela. Vice President Delcy Rodriguez has assumed the role of interim president, but many questions remain about the nation's leadership moving forward.
President Trump, on the other hand, has been dismissive of the prospect of a close relationship with Machado, suggesting that she lacks sufficient backing and respect within Venezuela. This has raised concerns about potential divisions regarding the country’s political future.
Machado’s comments emphasize the intricate and uncertain journey that lies ahead for Venezuela. With global attention trained on the situation, her potential return and influence will be scrutinized by both advocates and detractors alike.
