France captain Kylian Mbappe once again delivered on football's biggest stage, scoring two goals in France's convincing 3-0 victory over Sweden on Tuesday night in New York New Jersey. The win secured France's place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 16 and strengthened their position as one of the tournament favourites.
The victory also saw Mbappe achieve another major milestone in his World Cup career. His two goals extended his record for the most goals scored in FIFA World Cup knockout matches. He has now scored 18 goals in World Cup history, leaving him just one goal behind Lionel Messi's overall World Cup tally.
Mbappe also moved level with Messi on six goals in the race for the 2026 FIFA World Cup Golden Boot. However, the France captain currently leads the standings because he has provided two assists.
Bradley Barcola scored France's second goal as Didier Deschamps' side comfortably advanced to the next round. France will now face Paraguay in Philadelphia on July 4.
Sweden defended well during the opening stages and managed to keep France from scoring for much of the first half.
The breakthrough finally came just before halftime. After good work between Michael Olise and Ousmane Dembele from a short corner, Mbappe received the ball inside the penalty area. He quickly shifted the ball onto his right foot before firing a powerful shot past Sweden goalkeeper Jacob Widell Zetterstrom.

Instead of celebrating with the crowd, Mbappe ran directly towards France head coach Didier Deschamps and embraced him. Deschamps had recently returned to the France camp after attending his mother's funeral. Soon after, the rest of the French squad joined them, showing their support for their coach.
France increased their lead shortly after the second half began.
Michael Olise produced a perfectly timed through ball that split Sweden's defence and found Bradley Barcola. The Paris Saint-Germain winger calmly finished the chance to make it 2-0 and score his second goal of the tournament.
Olise later registered another assist when he released Mbappe with another precise pass. The France captain raced through before calmly finishing past the advancing goalkeeper to score his second goal of the night.
The goal marked Mbappe's ninth FIFA World Cup knockout goal, extending his record as the competition's highest scorer in knockout matches.
With the result already secured, Deschamps substituted Mbappe late in the game to a standing ovation as France comfortably completed another impressive victory.
Although Mbappe continues to break records, he has repeatedly stated that winning another World Cup title is more important than individual achievements.
The France captain has publicly supported his teammates throughout the tournament and has fully embraced his leadership role as the squad aims to reach a third consecutive FIFA World Cup final.
After the match, Didier Deschamps praised his captain's all-round contribution. "Kylian knows how to defend. He scores goals too, more than anyone else," the France coach said. "I told you from day one that he's on a mission. He has embraced his role as captain. The image people may have of him from the outside only rarely reflects who he really is."
Mbappe also explained why he celebrated his opening goal with his coach. "That's the DNA of this group," he said. "We're all in this together. The coach has gone through something that, unfortunately, everyone experiences at some point in life. It's incredibly difficult. He'll never be alone with us. We'll support him."
When asked whether he was already thinking about France's next match against Paraguay, Mbappe responded with a smile. "Right now my focus is on the air conditioning and the dressing room."
France have now won all four of their matches at the FIFA World Cup 2026. The team has scored 13 goals while conceding only two, showing strong form as the knockout stage begins.
Their next challenge will be Paraguay, who reached the Round of 16 after defeating four-time world champions Germany in a penalty shootout.
For Mbappe, the upcoming knockout match offers another opportunity to add to his remarkable World Cup record. He is now just one goal away from matching Lionel Messi's overall World Cup scoring tally while continuing to lead the race for the tournament's Golden Boot.
