On Tuesday, Ireland’s Prime Minister Micheál Martin plans to engage in in-depth trade discussions with Li Qiang, China's second-in-command, as Ireland aims to fortify its economic and strategic connections with the second-largest global economy, especially in light of the fraught relations between China and the EU.
As part of a five-day official visit, Martin has emphasized the economic focus of his talks, which follows a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping a day earlier.
Martin indicated that critical trade matters, such as beef exports from Ireland to China and imposed tariffs on dairy goods, will be thoroughly examined. He noted President Xi's willingness to discuss these particular Irish concerns with Chinese officials.
Martin characterized his meeting with Xi as friendly and productive, touching on numerous subjects including bilateral relations and the wider EU-China dynamic.
On a broader scale, Xi conveyed a desire to create a long-term structure to navigate future trade relationships between Europe and China, emphasizing the significance of a strategic outlook when resolving trade disputes.
Tensions in China–EU relations have been heightened since the EU imposed tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles in 2024, leading to China's retaliatory measures, including tariffs on European dairy.
In recent months, China has additionally set import quotas and tariffs on beef imports starting this year, influencing global markets including Ireland.
Martin, marking his status as the first Irish prime minister to visit China since 2012, has advocated for a measured approach towards China. He has moderated recent pronouncements by Ireland’s intelligence that label Beijing as a hostile entity, highlighting instead the necessity for enduring strategic dialogue.
