NASA, in collaboration with the US Department of Energy, has signed a memorandum of understanding to develop a nuclear reactor for deployment on the Moon by 2030. This initiative is a significant leap in the US’ plans to maintain a persistent human presence on the lunar surface.
This decision stems from an executive order issued by President Donald Trump on December 18, 2025, which is titled “Ensuring American Space Superiority.” The order mandates federal agencies to prepare for the launch of a lunar surface nuclear reactor by the decade's end, recognizing the importance of nuclear energy in future space missions.
The planned reactor will utilize a fission surface power system designed to provide a consistent supply of electricity. Unlike traditional solar panels, this system will function efficiently during prolonged lunar nights and under extreme temperature variations, which is vital for extended lunar missions and permanent installations.
This nuclear power system is anticipated to power habitats, scientific research, communication networks, and other essential operations required for long-term lunar missions. Additionally, it is envisioned as a crucial step toward future interplanetary ventures, particularly human exploration of Mars.
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman stated that this initiative supports national objectives for lunar return, infrastructure development, and sustainable exploration investments. He stressed that nuclear power plays a pivotal role in fulfilling these goals.
The memorandum will foster enhanced collaboration between NASA and the Energy Department, merging expertise in space technology with advanced nuclear capabilities. Officials are optimistic that this partnership will expedite the development of reliable power systems essential for upcoming missions.
Through this strategic move, the US aims to fortify its role as a leader in space exploration while paving the way for a lasting human presence beyond Earth.
