Violence Erupts in Nepal; India Closes Border Amid Unrest

Post by : Meena Hassan

Tensions have surged in Nepal's border areas, specifically in Birgunj, compelling local authorities to enforce strict security measures. The unrest ignited following the release of a controversial video on social media that allegedly offended specific religious groups. Consequently, a curfew has been mandated in Birgunj, which is adjacent to Raxaul, Bihar, India.

The turmoil began in the Kamala Municipality of Dhanusha district, where two individuals were accused of distributing the provocative video. Enraged locals apprehended these individuals and handed them over to law enforcement, citing concerns for communal harmony. However, violence escalated with the vandalism of a mosque located in the Sakhuwa Maran area of Kamala.

Members of Hindu communities reported that the video contained disparaging remarks about their deities, exacerbating tensions. Protests turned chaotic, with demonstrators clashing with the police and vandalizing a local police station. Law enforcement responded by deploying tear gas to disperse the agitated crowd.

As conditions deteriorated, India implemented preventive measures by sealing the border completely, restricting civilian traffic except for emergency responders. Security personnel have amplified monitoring at critical crossing points like Maitri Bridge, conducting comprehensive checks on all travelers. Canine units and increased patrols have been stationed in surrounding border areas to avert further disturbances.

The rising security concerns have led many Indian migrant workers in Nepal to return to their home country. Shops and marketplaces in Birgunj are closed, with residents avoiding public areas as the curfew remains in effect. Many individuals plan to resume their routines only once stability returns.

Local authorities are vigilantly overseeing the ongoing situation, with the goal of reinstating peace and curbing any further unrest.
