North Korea Conducts Hypersonic Missile Test Supervised by Kim Jong Un

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a significant military display, North Korean leader Kim Jong Un supervised a successful hypersonic missile test on Sunday, marking the country's initial ballistic missile trial of the year and reinforcing Pyongyang's commitment to enhancing its nuclear deterrent.

As reported by state media, Kim characterized the test as a pivotal strategic advancement necessary for maintaining a “strong and reliable” nuclear deterrent. He associated this move with recent global events and escalating geopolitical tensions, although no specific incident was referenced.

Military sources confirmed that the missiles traveled about 1,000 kilometers before impacting targets in waters east of the Korean Peninsula. This launch occurred concurrently with a state visit to China by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung, North Korea’s primary diplomatic ally.

On the same day, Pyongyang condemned U.S. military actions in Venezuela, deeming them a breach of national sovereignty. Analysts speculate that the missile test serves as a reaction to these activities and a signal to Washington and its allies.

Hypersonic missiles are engineered to exceed speeds five times that of sound while also maneuvering at lower altitudes than conventional ballistic missiles. Experts highlight that their primary advantage lies in evading missile defense systems through erratic flight patterns.

Defense analysts suggest the tested missiles likely belong to the Hwasong-11 series, which were showcased at a military parade last year. This test underscores North Korea's aim to manifest operational readiness of advanced weaponry at a moment's notice.

The development of hypersonic missiles is among five key nuclear objectives outlined by Pyongyang in 2021. Recent state media reports have also focused on progress regarding nuclear-powered submarines, indicating broader aspirations to improve strategic strike capabilities.

Analysts argue the timing of the test serves to deliver a robust message ahead of regional diplomatic discussions, reaffirming North Korea's stance against any renewed negotiations over denuclearization. Kim Jong Un is anticipated to emphasize these advancements at the forthcoming ruling party congress, positioning North Korea as a fully recognized nuclear power.
