Norway has remarkably fulfilled its 2025 objective to stop the sale of new fossil-fuel passenger vehicles. The latest statistics from the Norwegian Road Federation (OFV) reveal that nearly all new car registrations in 2025 were electric or plug-in hybrids, highlighting the country’s significant shift towards sustainable transportation.
A total of 179,549 new passenger cars were registered in Norway during 2025, comprised of 172,232 fully electric vehicles alongside 2,751 plug-in hybrids. This makes up a commendable 95.9% of all new car sales, an increase from 88.9% in 2024.
Moreover, 97.5% of all vehicles sold last year were equipped to charge via a plug, further emphasizing Norway’s dominance in electric vehicle adoption.
The remaining vehicles included 2,306 conventional hybrids without plug-in capabilities, 1,773 diesel vehicles, and merely 487 petrol-powered units. This implies that only 1.3% of newly sold vehicles lacked a traction battery. Notably, there were no hydrogen cars registered in 2025, a decrease from nine in the previous year.
Norway’s determined advances toward electric mobility illustrate its commitment to cutting carbon emissions and promoting a sustainable future in transportation.
