Tragic Train Accident in Oaxaca, Mexico Claims 13 Lives

Post by : Meena Hassan

A devastating train derailment in the southeastern Oaxaca region of Mexico has resulted in the loss of 13 lives and nearly 100 injuries, as reported by local officials. The accident occurred on the Interoceanic train route, which links the Gulf of Mexico to the Pacific Coast. At the time of the incident, the train was carrying 241 passengers along with nine crew members.

According to the Mexican Navy, which oversees the country’s railways, 98 individuals sustained injuries due to the accident. Of these, 36 people are currently hospitalized for treatment. The train came off the tracks while navigating a sharp curve near Nizanda. Investigations into the cause of the derailment have been launched by authorities, including Mexico’s Attorney General.

President Claudia Sheinbaum has expressed her concerns about the incident, highlighting that five of the injured are in critical condition. She noted that high-ranking government officials, including the Secretary of the Navy, are on their way to the accident site to coordinate rescue and recovery efforts.

Images and video footage captured at the crash site reveal rescue teams aiding passengers as they evacuate the train, which had tilted precariously off the tracks and down a cliffside. The Interoceanic train involved consists of two locomotives and four passenger cars, providing crucial connectivity for passenger and freight transport between Salina Cruz on the Pacific and Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast.

Governor of Oaxaca, Salomón Jara Cruz, expressed his “deep sorrow” regarding the incident and confirmed that both state and federal agencies are collaborating to assist the victims and their families during this challenging time.

This rail line was inaugurated two years ago as part of a governmental strategy aimed at enhancing economic development and infrastructure in southern Mexico. The initiative seeks to modernize transportation across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, establishing a vital trade corridor by developing ports, railways, and industrial hubs.

Although today’s tragic accident casts a shadow over these objectives, officials remain dedicated to progressing with the development and modernization of this significant transportation route to foster future regional prosperity. Ongoing rescue efforts and investigations are aimed at providing relief to affected individuals and uncovering the circumstances leading to the derailment.
