OpenAI Opens ChatGPT App Directory to Third-Party Developers

OpenAI Opens ChatGPT App Directory to Third-Party Developers

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

OpenAI has started accepting apps from external developers that can be used directly inside ChatGPT. Along with this move, the company has launched a new ChatGPT App Directory, which users can access from the ChatGPT sidebar or by visiting chatgpt.com/apps. OpenAI has clarified that this platform should not be called a store, as it works more like a discovery directory for approved apps.

With this update, ChatGPT’s more than 800 million users can now search for and use newly approved third-party apps instantly. Once an app is installed, users can activate it during conversations by typing its name with the “@” symbol or choosing it from the tools menu. This allows users to continue their tasks without leaving the chat.

The app submission process officially opened on December 17, according to OpenAI’s announcement on its blog and developer channels. All submitted apps will go through a review process to ensure they follow OpenAI’s public rules and safety guidelines. Apps that meet these standards will start becoming available to users in early 2026.

To support developers, OpenAI announced it will host a public webinar called “Build Hour” on January 21. During this event, OpenAI engineers will explain how to build, design, and submit apps for ChatGPT, while also answering questions from developers interested in joining the platform.

This launch expands OpenAI’s developer ecosystem beyond its earlier limited group of partners. While OpenAI previously introduced a GPT Store, it focused mainly on simple text-based tools. In contrast, the new App Directory allows richer and more interactive experiences, including buttons, maps, sliders, and multiple display views. The GPT Store will still remain available alongside the new system.

At this early stage, app monetization is limited. Developers can link users to external websites to sell physical products only. Selling digital items, subscriptions, or in-app services is not yet allowed, though OpenAI says more options may be added in the future. All apps must follow strict rules, including having a clear privacy policy, avoiding ads, and being suitable for general audiences, including teenagers.

OpenAI says this change turns ChatGPT into more than just a chatbot. With apps that can pull live data, perform actions, and show interactive layouts, ChatGPT is becoming a central hub for useful tools and workflows. For both developers and users, this marks a major step toward a broader OpenAI developer ecosystem built directly inside conversations.
