Tragic Death of Tripura Student in Racial Attack Stirs National Outrage

Post by : Meena Hassan

The brutal racial attack on Anjel Chakma, a 24-year-old student from Tripura, has drawn strong condemnation from Congress leader Rahul Gandhi. Sadly, Anjel succumbed to his injuries in Uttarakhand following a violent encounter in Dehradun. Alongside his brother Michael, he faced a group wielding knives and blunt objects. Gandhi labeled the incident a "horrific hate crime" and accused the ruling BJP of fostering an environment of hatred, particularly aimed at the youth.

Anjel entered the hospital with severe stab wounds to his neck and abdomen and tragically passed away on December 26. His brother Michael received injuries to his head during the altercation. The incident, which took place near Selaqui, Dehradun, stemmed from a dispute about racial slurs involving local men.

According to reports, the confrontation escalated as the Chakma brothers confronted the abusers, resulting in Anjel being violently attacked. In the aftermath, five individuals were arrested, including two minors who were taken to a juvenile reform center. A suspect identified as a Nepalese national has fled, and a reward of Rs 25,000 has been offered for information leading to his arrest. The police are coordinating with Nepalese authorities for his capture.

Following the incident, there has been an outpouring of anger in Tripura and the Northeast region, with student organizations and civil society members calling for strict penalties for the attackers and urging the Central Government to combat ongoing racial discrimination faced by people from the Northeast.

Rahul Gandhi shared his condolences, asserting that "India thrives on unity and respect, not fear and violence." He urged for collective introspection and action against the rising tide of intolerance, reminding the populace that every citizen deserves protection against hate crimes.

In response, BJP's Tripura General Secretary, Bipin Debbarma, expressed sorrow over Anjel's death, highlighting that the Tripura Chief Minister is in communication with his Uttarakhand counterpart to ensure justice.

This harrowing incident has intensified the call for immediate measures against racial discrimination, emphasizing the need to safeguard the rights and dignity of all citizens, particularly those from the Northeast residing in various regions across India.
