A tragic incident unfolded off the coast of Gambia as a migrant boat carrying over 200 individuals capsized, with many still unaccounted for, as stated by the Defence Ministry. The disaster occurred on Wednesday, with the boat found stranded on a sandbank.
Rescue efforts have managed to save 96 people so far, with the bodies of seven victims recovered. Among those rescued, 10 individuals are in critical condition and are receiving necessary medical attention.
The vessel is believed to have been transporting migrants from diverse African nations. Every year, a significant number of individuals from Gambia, Senegal, and other nearby West African countries undertake this perilous journey, hoping to reach the Canary Islands and, ultimately, the European Union in search of improved living conditions.
This incident underscores the perilous journeys that migrants undertake in their quest for a better future. Rescue operations continue while officials urge for greater awareness and support for safe migration options.
