Pakistan Encounters Its Most Severe Violence in a Decade as Taliban Strife Escalates

Post by : Meena Hassan

2025 has marked a tragic peak of violence in Pakistan, making it the deadliest year in a decade, characterized by gunfire exchanges, aerial strikes, and suicide attacks. Recent statistics highlight that close to 4,000 individuals have perished due to militant attacks, the highest figures since 2015. Over 1,000 violent incidents, including bomb blasts and armed confrontations, have occurred nationwide, affecting civilians, military members, and insurgents alike.

This spike in violence is closely associated with the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), a militant faction aligned with the Taliban rule in Afghanistan. Pakistan holds the Taliban in Kabul responsible for sheltering and supporting TTP militants, a claim the Afghan Taliban has refuted. Kabul asserts that it has enforced restrictions on Afghans participating in foreign conflicts while attributing rising tensions to Pakistan's military actions.

The increase in assaults includes a significant suicide attack that claimed the lives of seven soldiers in North Waziristan, subsequently followed by accusations of Pakistani airstrikes on Afghanistan's northeastern border, which Islamabad denies.

Attempts by Turkey and Qatar to facilitate peace discussions between Pakistan and the Afghan Taliban quickly faltered, leading to persistent cross-border skirmishes. Since the Taliban regained power in 2021, relationships have deteriorated steadily. Islamabad had anticipated that the new administration in Kabul would neutralize the TTP threat, yet the militants have become increasingly audacious and active.

The TTP's ambitions have shifted from avenging Pakistan's support of the US military efforts in Afghanistan to aiming for the overthrow of Pakistan's government and the establishment of strict Islamic law. They dismiss the Durand Line, a long-standing border between the two nations, also disputed by the Afghan Taliban.

Currently, Pakistan stands as the second-most terror-afflicted nation on the globe. The TTP has secured modern weaponry, including drones and night-vision gear, much of which is believed to originate from abandoned US military supplies in Afghanistan. Approximately 8,500 TTP militants are operationally active, primarily from Afghan territory, frequently crossing the volatile border to execute strikes.

For the Afghan Taliban, confronting the TTP could jeopardize their alliances and lead fighters towards other extremist factions like ISIS and Al Qaeda, complicating the resolution process.

The ongoing conflict has adversely impacted trade and the economy. Cross-border violence and closures have hindered commerce, causing Pakistani exports to Afghanistan to plummet by over 90% in the past year and aggravating domestic inflation. Refugees are also affected as Pakistan, housing nearly two million Afghans, has deported tens of thousands it deems illegal.

Pakistan's political sphere, heavily influenced by military leadership, has restricted diplomatic remedies and preferred robust military responses. Analysts caution that without political engagement, efforts against terrorism may remain unsuccessful.

In the backdrop of these tensions, Pakistan is increasingly wary of India's alleged support for the TTP, as New Delhi fortifies its relations with the Afghan Taliban and explores new trade routes that sidestep Pakistan.
