Paris Summit Seeks Solid Security Guarantees for Ukraine

Post by : Meena Hassan

This week, Paris is the stage for a pivotal meeting involving representatives from over 30 countries, including Canada, as they strive to establish a sustainable ceasefire and a reconstruction agenda for Ukraine.

Attending the summit is Prime Minister Mark Carney, who will advocate for solid post-conflict security guarantees to deter any resurgence of Russian aggression in Eastern Europe. Prior to the main summit, defense chiefs gather to outline their strategy.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy convened security advisors from 18 coalition nations over the weekend in Kyiv, focusing on collective security strategies and their importance in a U.S.-initiated peace plan.

Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine will reject any agreement that merely prolongs conflict, stating, “Security guarantees must be credible and robust,” while accusing Russia of stalling negotiations to continue its military actions.

Analysts point out that Ukraine has effectively united a coalition of 35 countries willing to offer military assistance—a diplomatic achievement that may allow Ukraine to secure its defense without NATO involvement.

While Russia shows some openness to engage in talks under a U.S.-sponsored framework, it demands significant concessions, including territorial giveaways in the east, troop reductions, and the removal of foreign forces from Ukraine.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump suggested “strong security guarantees” for a 15-year span, but Zelenskyy is advocating for longer-term commitments. Analysts warn that fluctuating U.S. stances create additional uncertainty.

As the summit progresses in Paris, the world is watching closely, hoping this coalition can forge a genuine path to peace and security for Ukraine.
