Sisters Face Off: Ewa Sokola Sues Kaja Over Defamation in Weinstein Case

Post by : Bianca Haleem

The ongoing fallout from Harvey Weinstein’s legal challenges has taken a significant personal turn involving two sisters, Ewa and Kaja Sokola.

Ewa Sokola, a cardiologist in Wrocław, Poland, has initiated a defamation lawsuit against her younger sister, Kaja Sokola, in the federal court of Manhattan. Filed on Tuesday, the suit alleges that Kaja made damaging public comments that have severely impacted Ewa's reputation and her career in medicine.

Context of the Legal Dispute

Kaja Sokola provided crucial testimony in Weinstein’s recent criminal proceedings, alleging that he sexually assaulted her in 2006. Ewa was brought in as a supporting witness by the prosecution; however, her statements inadvertently helped Weinstein's defense.

After the trial, Kaja publicly criticized her sister's testimony, asserting that it weakened her own claims and compromised the prosecution’s stance. In legal documents, Kaja labeled Ewa's actions a personal “betrayal,” accusing her of withholding journal entries pertinent to the assault allegations.

Claims in the Lawsuit

Ewa's lawsuit argues that Kaja's public statements constitute libel and have exposed her to public disdain, humiliation, and professional shame in Poland. This has allegedly resulted in a loss of patient referrals and a decline in clinic personnel, greatly affecting her medical practice.

Furthermore, the suit claims that Kaja has made ludicrous accusations against Ewa, suggesting misconduct that includes homicide and theft, as well as collusion with Weinstein’s legal team. Ewa seeks unspecified damages through this legal action.

Attempts to reach Kaja Sokola’s legal representatives for comments have gone unanswered as of this publication.

Previous Verdicts in the Case

This lawsuit follows a divided verdict delivered in June where Weinstein was found guilty of sexual assault against production assistant Miriam Haley, yet acquitted of charges related to Kaja's allegations. Both incidents reportedly occurred in 2006.

The jury was unable to come to a decision on a separate charge involving allegations of rape made by former actress Jessica Mann, leading to a judicial mistrial as the jury foreperson opted out of further deliberations.

Weinstein awaits sentencing and has requested the court to overturn the conviction, presenting claims of juror coercion. A ruling from Judge Curtis Farber is anticipated on January 8.

Key Elements from the Trial

In her testimony, Kaja Sokola recounted incidents where Weinstein facilitated her work as an extra in The Nanny Diaries and later urged her and Ewa to visit his hotel room, where Kaja claims the assault transpired shortly before her 20th birthday.

Post-trial, Kaja alleged that Ewa’s testimony aided Weinstein’s defense by yielding a personal journal that discussed previous sexual assaults in Ewa’s life but omitted any mention of Weinstein, a detail that defense lawyers exploited to challenge the prosecution's story.

A Complex Family Dispute

What began as testimony in a highly publicized criminal trial has now spiraled into a contentious family conflict. As the Weinstein case unfolds further in the judicial system, Ewa’s defamation suit marks a striking and personal phase in this convoluted legal drama.
