A Quebec man, Simon Angers-Audet, 24, has been granted bail in connection with a terrorist plot. Released on Friday, he must adhere to strict conditions, including residing at his family home and regularly notifying authorities of his location.
This ruling comes after the Quebec Superior Court reversed an earlier denial of bail. Details regarding the evidence and reasoning behind the decision remain under a publication ban.
Angers-Audet is charged alongside Marc-Aurèle Chabot and Raphaël Lagacé with various offenses related to terrorism and weapons. The group allegedly planned to forcibly take land in the Quebec City area as part of anti-government activities.
Chabot additionally faces a serious charge for allegedly directing others to commit actions for a terrorist group, which could lead to a life sentence.
Matthew Forbes from Pont-Rouge, also implicated, confronts multiple charges, including possession of firearms and explosives, and has similarly been granted bail under strict conditions.
At the time of their arrests on July 8, both Chabot and Forbes were serving members of the Canadian Forces based at Valcartier. Investigations revealed their involvement in paramilitary training, with court documents indicating Chabot voiced intentions of employing violence against state officials and referenced a Waco-style incident in an online podcast prior to his arrest.
As the case unfolds, it amplifies concerns around extremist movements and public safety in the area.
