Russia Launches Fresh Attacks on Kyiv as Zelensky Prepares for Talks with Trump

Post by : Meena Hassan

In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russia executed new missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions early Saturday. This aggressive act occurred just prior to a crucial meeting scheduled between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump aimed at negotiating an end to the ongoing war.

Explosions lit up the Ukrainian capital as air defense systems were deployed in an attempt to neutralize incoming threats. Ukrainian military officials confirmed that both missiles and drones were aimed at Kyiv and areas in the northeastern and southern parts of the country. Throughout the early morning, air raid sirens blared, keeping residents on high alert. Fortunately, authorities reported no immediate incidents of damage or power outages.

These overnight assaults come as Zelensky readies for critical talks in Florida with Trump, which he believes could be instrumental in crafting a potential roadmap towards peace following the Russian invasion that began in February 2022. This conflict has evolved into the most lethal military engagement in Europe since World War II.

According to Zelensky, the discussions will prioritize territorial control in light of a possible ceasefire—an intricate issue in the continuing negotiations. He indicated that a US-supported 20-point peace framework is on the brink of completion and that a distinct security guarantees agreement with Washington is also nearing its conclusion. For Ukraine, having binding security assurances is crucial to prevent any future aggressions.

Trump asserted that the US is spearheading the peace initiative and emphasized that no agreement would move forward without his endorsement. He also expressed optimistic sentiments about the upcoming discussions and hinted at a forthcoming conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Territorial disagreements remain a significant hurdle, with Russia insisting that Ukraine withdraw from segments of the Donetsk region, while Kyiv remains firm that any ceasefire must maintain existing battle lines. The control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant—the largest in Europe—also continues to complicate matters.

One mediation suggestion involves establishing a free economic zone should Ukraine agree to cede certain territories, although essential details are still under negotiation. Zelensky mentioned that he might present the peace proposal to a national referendum if diplomatic support wanes, provided there is a temporary ceasefire consented to by Russia.

While Russia has not officially commented on the recent strikes, high-ranking officials in Moscow have acknowledged ongoing interactions with US representatives, indicating that negotiations might be nearing a critical juncture even as clashes continue on the battlefield.
