Russia Launches Fresh Attacks on Kyiv as Zelensky Prepares for Talks with Trump

In a significant escalation of hostilities, Russia executed new missile and drone strikes on Kyiv and other Ukrainian regions early Saturday. This aggressive act occurred just prior to a crucial meeting scheduled between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump aimed at negotiating an end to the ongoing war.

For Ukraine, having binding security assurances is crucial to prevent any future aggressions.

Trump asserted that the US is spearheading the peace initiative and emphasized that no agreement would move forward without his endorsement. He also expressed optimistic sentiments about the upcoming discussions and hinted at a forthcoming conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Territorial disagreements remain a significant hurdle, with Russia insisting that Ukraine withdraw from segments of the Donetsk region, while Kyiv remains firm that any ceasefire must maintain existing battle lines. The control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant—the largest in Europe—also continues to complicate matters.

One mediation suggestion involves establishing a free economic zone should Ukraine agree to cede certain territories, although essential details are still under negotiation.
