Santhakumari, the cherished mother of Malayalam film legend Mohanlal, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday at their home in Elamakkara, Kochi. She was 90 years old. This loss signifies the closure of a remarkable journey spanning nine decades, characterized by love, endurance, and quiet fortitude.
Hailing from Elanthoor in the Pathanamthitta district, Santhakumari spent the majority of her life in Thiruvananthapuram, relocating years ago due to her husband Viswanathan Nair's professional duties. Viswanathan served the Kerala government honorably as law secretary until his passing, with the family's move closely linked to his career.
Santhakumari was an unwavering pillar for her family, providing quiet support during various phases of their lives. After suffering a stroke in recent years, she was brought to Kochi by Mohanlal to live with him and his family, ensuring she received nurturing care and companionship in her later years. Surrounded by family, she celebrated her 90th birthday in August 2025, marking a significant milestone.
Mohanlal has frequently expressed deep affection for the relationship he shared with Santhakumari, often regarding her as a source of strength and motivation throughout his life. Her nurturing spirit and resilience shone brightly during difficult times, especially when she stood by her husband after he lost his memory, providing him with loving support as they attended public events together.
Mohanlal attributes much of his compassion, kindness, and strong values to the example set by his mother. He has noted that lessons on helping others and forming meaningful connections came from her patient and selfless care for his father.
Santhakumari is survived by her renowned son Mohanlal, widely regarded as one of the most beloved actors in Indian cinema, and they also remember his late elder brother Pyarelal, who passed away in 2000.
Her passing occurs shortly after the release of Mohanlal's latest film Vrusshabha on December 25, 2025. Family and fans are deeply saddened by the loss of a gentle yet strong figure who played a vital role in shaping the life and career of one of Malayalam cinema’s biggest stars.
Her demise has sparked an outpouring of condolences from fans, colleagues, and the film community, who remember her not just as the mother of a superstar but as an extraordinary woman in her own right. While Mohanlal and his family grieve, they also honor the enduring legacy of love and values she has left behind.
