Saskatchewan's Premier Scott Moe has expressed his support for Prime Minister Mark Carney’s forthcoming trip to China, deeming it a crucial measure to tackle ongoing trade challenges impacting Canadian farmers.
Moe noted his satisfaction regarding Carney's planned discussions in China next week, particularly concerning the significant tariffs that China places on Canadian canola. He remains hopeful that these negotiations will enhance market opportunities for canola, which has faced limitations since the spring.
Currently, China applies a steep 76 percent tariff on Canadian canola seed, a reaction widely thought to be in response to Canada’s own implementation of a 100 percent tariff on Chinese electric vehicles.
Beyond canola seeds, China has imposed tariffs on various Canadian exports, including canola oil, meal, peas, pork, and select seafood items. These measures came after Canada instituted tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum.
Premier Moe highlighted the necessity for Canada to adopt a genuine and pragmatic approach in its dealings with China.
“Engaging with China is critical if Canada aims to secure, diversify, and expand its markets globally,” Moe stated in a comment via social media.
In September, Moe himself traveled to China with federal officials to explore solutions to this ongoing trade conflict.
Prime Minister Carney is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. This marks the first official Canadian prime ministerial visit to China in more than eight years and is a pivotal moment for Canada-China relations.
