Saudi Coalition Issues Stern Warning to Yemen Separatists

Post by : Bianca Haleem

On Saturday, the Saudi-led coalition engaged in the Yemeni conflict issued a clear warning regarding military actions by southern separatists that could jeopardize peace efforts in the region.

Brigadier General Turki al-Maliki, the coalition’s spokesperson, emphasized that any activity disrupting de-escalation efforts would be addressed swiftly to protect civilians and maintain order. The Saudi Press Agency reported his statements.

Al-Maliki called out the Southern Transitional Council (STC), a separatist entity supported by the UAE, for alleged grave human rights violations against local populations, though he did not present specific evidence for these claims.

Escalating Tensions Following Alleged Airstrikes

This warning came after the STC claimed that Saudi Arabia conducted airstrikes targeting its forces, a statement Riyadh has yet to acknowledge. The relationship between Saudi Arabia and the UAE has faced strain in recent months, primarily due to the STC's maneuvers and growing influence in southern Yemen.

In response to the turmoil, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio called for calm. He expressed U.S. concerns about recent developments in southeastern Yemen and urged all parties to seek dialogue and diplomatic solutions, commending the diplomatic roles of Saudi Arabia and the UAE.

Power Struggles in Southern Yemen

Yemen's civil war has persisted for over a decade. While Iran-aligned Houthi forces dominate the northern regions, a coalition supported by Saudi Arabia and the UAE backs the internationally recognized government in the south. The UAE also champions the STC, which advocates for a separate South Yemen.

Earlier this month, STC forces advanced into Hadramout and Mahra, taking over a resource-rich area and displacing units connected to the Saudi-aligned National Shield Forces, another faction opposing the Houthis.

The coalition has insisted that STC fighters retreat from these regions, return authority to local governance, and vacate military positions.

Following an emergency meeting on Friday, Rashad al-Alimi, head of Yemen's Presidential Leadership Council, condemned the separatists' actions as serious infringements on civilian safety. Officials from the coalition noted that the warning was issued at al-Alimi's behest to ensure the protection of residents in Hadramout and to avert further conflicts.
