Saudia Launches First Direct Flight from Riyadh to Moscow

Saudia Launches First Direct Flight from Riyadh to Moscow

Post by : Mariam Al-Faris

Saudi Arabia’s national airline, Saudia, has started its first-ever direct flight from Riyadh to Moscow, landing safely at Sheremetyevo Airport. The new service marks a major step in improving travel, trade, and diplomatic ties between Saudi Arabia and Russia.

Flight Schedule and Benefits

The Riyadh–Moscow route will operate three times a week, giving passengers a faster and easier option. Before this, travelers had to take flights with long layovers in other countries. Now, they can reach Moscow directly, saving time and enjoying a smoother journey.

Flynas Strengthens Air Connections

Saudi budget airline Flynas also contributes to these new air links. It launched direct flights between Riyadh and Moscow’s Vnukovo Airport in August 2025 and plans to begin Jeddah–Moscow flights in December. With both Saudia and Flynas offering connections, passengers have more flexibility and better choices for travel.

Growing Saudi–Russian Cooperation

This flight represents the strong and growing relationship between Saudi Arabia and Russia. Ties between both nations have expanded in politics, business, and culture, supported by the personal bond between Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and President Vladimir Putin. Saudi Arabia even helped mediate a prisoner exchange deal last year, showing trust between the two countries.

Boost for Tourism and Culture

Tourism is expected to grow on both sides. Russian visitors can now explore Saudi Arabia’s cultural landmarks, historic sites, and modern attractions without long transfers. Saudis, on the other hand, can travel directly to Moscow to enjoy its architecture, museums, and theatre scene. The rise in tourism will also help local hotels, restaurants, and travel services.

Improving Business and Trade Links

The new flights will make business travel faster and more efficient. Executives and investors from both countries can now meet face-to-face more easily, helping them finalize deals and build partnerships in sectors like energy, technology, and construction. Direct flights mean quicker decisions and stronger cooperation.

Encouraging Educational and Cultural Exchange

The flights will also open doors for students, researchers, and artists. They can attend universities, conferences, and exhibitions in both countries. Cultural exchange programs, performances, and academic workshops will become more accessible, promoting mutual understanding between Saudi and Russian communities.

Passenger Convenience and Comfort

Travelers now enjoy shorter travel times, fewer layovers, and reduced risk of missed connections or lost luggage. Families, tourists, and business passengers benefit from a smoother, more reliable experience that reflects Saudia’s focus on comfort and service quality.

A Step Toward Stronger Diplomacy

The flight’s launch also carries a diplomatic message. It symbolizes growing trust and cooperation between Saudi Arabia and Russia across several fields—aviation, trade, education, and culture. This partnership aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader goal of expanding international collaboration.

Future Plans for Expansion

Saudia may increase its weekly flights from three to five based on demand, while Flynas prepares to begin its Jeddah–Moscow service in December. Both airlines plan to strengthen connectivity, reflecting the rising interest in travel between the two countries.

Economic Growth and Challenges

Experts expect these direct flights to boost tourism revenue and support job creation in airports and travel sectors. However, challenges such as visa processing, airport coordination, and political stability need ongoing attention to ensure smooth operations and passenger safety.

Positive Response from Travelers

Passengers on the first flight expressed enthusiasm about the convenience and shorter travel time. Many Russians were visiting Saudi Arabia for the first time, while Saudi travelers celebrated the easier access to Moscow. Both sides welcomed the move as a new chapter in travel and friendship.

The launch of Saudia’s direct Riyadh–Moscow flight marks a historic milestone in Saudi–Russian relations. It opens new opportunities for tourism, business, education, and cultural exchange, creating stronger ties between the two nations and bringing people closer than ever before.
