Destruction from Cyclone Senyar: 22 Villages Erased in Aceh

Post by : Meena Hassan

Cyclone Senyar struck northern Sumatra in late November, inflicting severe devastation across Aceh. Reports indicate that 22 villages have been entirely wiped out due to catastrophic floods and landslides, with many communities remaining cut off from assistance.

Gayo Lues regency experienced the most severe impact, losing eight villages to rushing floodwaters and landslides. Aceh Tamiang regency was similarly affected, with five villages completely obliterated by the disaster.

Officials have confirmed that entire communities have been submerged under mud, debris, and water. Tragically, several lives have been lost, and many residents were forced to evacuate to safer areas.

More than a month following the cyclone's assault, around 15,000 individuals from 30 villages in Aceh remain isolated, spanning regencies such as Gayo Lues, Aceh Tamiang, Bener Meriah, North Aceh, East Aceh, and Southeast Aceh.

Due to collapsed infrastructure, emergency teams are relying on helicopters and boats to deliver essential supplies like food and medicine. Heavy machinery is being utilized to clear debris and restore access, but advancements are discouragingly slow.

Volunteers who have reached some of the most severely affected villages report alarming conditions. In one remote area, residents are struggling with limited food resources. A mosque is the sole structure left standing amidst the mud and devastation.

Many families fled to higher ground during the cyclone and continue to dwell in makeshift shelters due to their fear of returning home, given the lingering threat of further floods.

The cyclone made landfall on November 25, unleashing torrential rains and powerful winds, leading to extensive flooding and landslides throughout Aceh and neighboring areas. Millions have been impacted, with over a thousand reported dead, countless injured, and many still unaccounted for.

Aceh has emerged as the most severely affected province, witnessing immense destruction to homes, roads, and bridges. Ongoing heavy rainfall throughout the season is causing renewed flooding, which complicates rescue and rebuilding missions.
