Severe Winter Storm Impacts Southern California Ahead of Holidays

Post by : Bianca Haleem

Southern California faces the repercussions of an intense winter storm that resulted in heavy rainfall, flooding, and mudslides throughout the area, with meteorologists predicting another storm system could hit on Christmas Day.

Although rainfall has subsided in some regions, weather forecasters warned that showers and potential thunderstorms could continue, heightening the risk of additional flash floods. Experts indicated the possibility of one of the wettest Christmases in recent years, posing significant hazards for communities near recently burned areas.

Evacuation orders and shelter-in-place advisories were issued in various mountainous communities following heavy rains and gusty winds that caused debris flows. Areas where vegetation had burned away in past wildfires were unable to manage the sudden surge of water, leading to mud and rocks cascading down hillsides.

In San Bernardino County, firefighters conducted several rescues of individuals trapped in vehicles as mud and debris complicated access to Wrightwood, a resort town located in the San Gabriel Mountains northeast of Los Angeles. The total number of rescues has not yet been confirmed. Fire crews also carried out safety checks door-to-door, urging residents to stay indoors.

Nearby Lytle Creek faced an evacuation order after floodwaters washed out the community’s only bridge. Families found themselves stranded across the creek, seeking shelter in a local community center or nearby hotels.

Despite the challenges, community spirit shone through in Wrightwood, where neighbors came together to assist a family stranded in a rental cabin, lacking food and baby supplies due to blocked roads. Assistance arrived swiftly, with community members delivering groceries and baby essentials within an hour of their online request.

Local officials highlighted that last year’s wildfires had rendered the terrain particularly susceptible to mudslides. Janice Quick, president of the Wrightwood Chamber of Commerce, noted extensive forest loss due to a 2024 fire, exacerbating the risks during heavy rains.

Flood warnings were also issued for coastal regions, including Malibu, while wind and flood advisories extended northwards into Sacramento Valley and San Francisco Bay Area. Several major routes were temporarily closed due to flooding, notably a section of Interstate 5 near Burbank Airport.

The storms were driven by multiple atmospheric rivers bringing moisture from the tropics during a busy holiday travel season. The National Weather Service forecasts indicate that some locations may receive 4 to 8 inches of rain this week, significantly above the seasonal average, with even higher accumulations expected in mountain areas.

At higher elevations, heavy snowfall and strong winds resulted in near-whiteout conditions across parts of the Sierra Nevada, prompting avalanche alerts around Lake Tahoe.

Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency across six counties, facilitating rapid resource deployment. Emergency crews and the California National Guard are on standby, as officials advise residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain vigilant to changing weather conditions.
