Debate in Singapore Over Opposition Leader Pritam Singh's Removal

Post by : Meena Hassan

Singapore's Parliament will convene on Wednesday to discuss the possibility of removing Pritam Singh as Leader of the Opposition. This discussion follows Singh's conviction for giving false testimony to Parliament. The motion, introduced by Indranee Rajah of the governing People's Action Party (PAP), argues that Singh's actions were 'dishonourable and unbecoming.'

At 49 years old, Singh made history as Singapore's inaugural official Leader of the Opposition post-1965 independence. His ascent came after the Workers' Party won five seats in the 2020 general election, raising their total to ten. In contrast, the PAP maintained its dominance in the 2025 elections by securing 87 out of 97 parliamentary seats, leaving the Workers' Party with the rest.

The focal issue arises from a 2024 court ruling, which concluded that Singh was guilty of two counts of lying to Parliament concerning false claims about party member Raeesah Khan, who had also confessed to misleading Parliament. Although fined, Singh kept his parliamentary seat and remains eligible for the 2025 elections, while his appeal was dismissed in December.

Indranee stressed the seriousness of Singh's misconduct, warning that lying under oath poses a significant threat to integrity in governance. She hinted that the actions of other Workers' Party leaders, such as Sylvia Lim and Faisal Manap, could also be re-evaluated in light of Singh's verdict, opening the door to potential consequences.

The impending debate aims to assess an appropriate course of action regarding Singh’s conduct and conviction, reinforcing Singapore’s pledge to uphold accountability and trust in its political landscape.
