South Korea Initiates New Investigation into Jeju Air Disaster

Post by : Raina Al-Fahim

In a significant move towards uncovering the facts about the Jeju Air crash that occurred in December 2024, South Korea’s National Assembly has approved a new, independent inquiry into the tragic incident.

This devastating crash remains the deadliest aviation accident in South Korea's history, claiming the lives of 179 individuals with just two survivors from aboard the aircraft.

The newly enacted legislation mandates the formation of an 18-member investigative committee comprising lawmakers who will meticulously examine the circumstances surrounding the crash and assess whether any previous official findings were concealed or understated.

The panel will delve into various potential causes of the Jeju Air disaster, including bird strikes, mechanical failures, and the safety conditions of the airport runway.

The incident occurred when a Jeju Air Boeing 737-800 attempted to land at Muan Airport without deploying its landing gear, ultimately overrunning the runway and colliding with an elevated structure, which resulted in a fire that engulfed the fuselage.

An earlier report from a government investigation board indicated that both engines sustained bird strikes, while a later assessment revealed an alarming finding: the left engine was shut down despite being less damaged than the right engine, potentially affecting the aircraft’s ability to remain aloft.

Moreover, safety experts expressed grave concerns about the structure at the runway's end, noting it failed to comply with international safety standards intended for crash scenarios.

The new investigation will also scrutinize whether any government agency attempted to obscure findings or downplay the severity of the Jeju Air crash.

As of now, the official investigation has yet to publish its conclusive report. Aviation experts caution that aircraft accidents typically arise from a combination of factors, rather than a singular error.

Legislators emphasize that this renewed inquiry is essential to ensure full transparency, rectify safety deficiencies, and prevent future tragedies of this magnitude.
