Heavy rainstorms sweeping through California have caused extensive flooding and mudslides, resulting in the deaths of three individuals as reported by local officials on Christmas night.
A major storm system is expected to continue affecting the area through Friday, with some parts of Los Angeles County receiving up to 11 inches of rain. This intense downpour caused evacuations, submerged roadways, and the closure of major highways. Emergency teams undertook multiple rescues, helping people trapped in vehicles as floodwaters rose swiftly.
Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for Los Angeles and several southern California counties on Wednesday as conditions deteriorated. By Thursday night, nearly 100,000 residents statewide were without power.
Meteorologists caution that the risk is not over yet. The US Weather Prediction Center has warned of potential flash flooding incidents, with rising water levels posing a threat of overflow in streams and rivers.
Authorities confirmed that a 64-year-old man in San Diego died after being struck by a falling tree during Wednesday's storm. In northern California, a 74-year-old man lost his life when floodwaters engulfed his vehicle in Redding while police attempted a rescue. Additionally, earlier in the week, a woman in her 70s was killed along the Mendocino County coast when a strong wave swept her into the ocean.
Evacuation alerts have been issued for parts of San Bernardino County, and flash flood warnings are in effect for sections of the San Francisco Bay Area. The region has experienced powerful winds, with gusts recorded over 100 miles per hour near San Jose.
In areas surrounding Los Angeles, such as Altadena, flooding has caused mudslides in regions previously affected by wildfires, where the scorched earth struggles to absorb excess rain. City officials are urging residents to exercise caution, especially during this busy travel season.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass has declared a local emergency and advised residents to minimize travel due to the serious risks posed by the storm.
Experts indicate that the extreme weather is driven by multiple atmospheric rivers that are drawing moisture from tropical regions, enhancing rainfall during one of the heaviest travel weeks of the year.
