Taiwan's President Postpones Africa Journey Amid Tensions

Post by : Shakul

President Lai Ching-te of Taiwan has delayed his upcoming trip to Africa after multiple countries retracted their flight clearance for his aircraft. This incident has heightened existing tensions between Taiwan and China, focusing on their struggle for diplomatic sway.

Originally, Lai was set to travel to Eswatini, Taiwan’s sole diplomatic partner in Africa, from April 22 to April 26. However, cancellations of flight approvals along the planned route forced officials to postpone the journey.

Sources in Taipei indicate that Seychelles, Mauritius, and Madagascar rescinded their overflight permissions, with Taiwan alleging that China exerted pressure on these nations, leveraging economic and political factors.

Taiwanese officials asserted that such actions signify interference in sovereign nations' affairs and threaten regional stability. They expressed alarm over how this situation undermines Taiwan's global outreach and diplomatic relationships.

China, which regards Taiwan as part of its territory, backed the involved countries’ decisions. Chinese officials maintained that compliance with the one-China policy is consistent with international principles and reinforces their stance on Taiwan.

Despite the visit's cancellation, Eswatini reiterated its commitment to Taiwan, asserting that the postponement would not alter their longstanding relations. The African nation remains Taiwan’s exclusive formal ally in the region.

In recent times, Taiwan has witnessed a reduction in its diplomatic allies, as numerous countries have shifted allegiance to China. Currently, Taiwan enjoys formal ties with a select number of nations, predominantly in lesser-known areas globally.

This scenario underscores the persistent geopolitical rivalry between China and Taiwan, as both entities strive to enhance their global influence and partnerships in diverse locales.
