Thailand has released 18 Cambodian soldiers who were in custody for 155 days, following a renewed ceasefire agreement with Cambodia. This ceasefire, effective from noon on Saturday, aims to end weeks of intense conflict that led to over 101 fatalities and the displacement of hundreds of thousands from both nations.
The soldiers were returned to Cambodia at a border checkpoint on Wednesday morning. Although originally scheduled for Tuesday, the transfer was postponed as Thailand raised concerns over allegations that Cambodia violated ceasefire terms, which Cambodia has strongly denied.
Thailand’s Foreign Ministry stated that the soldiers were treated according to international humanitarian standards during their detention, addressing any apprehensions about their treatment.
The clashes flared up this month after the collapse of a previous ceasefire struck in July, facilitated by international leaders, including the U.S. and Malaysia. Despite those earlier efforts, tensions escalated, leading to artillery exchanges and air force activity.
This latest ceasefire agreement is an encouraging sign for peace along the border, with both nations expressing a commitment to uphold this truce and seek a lasting resolution to their ongoing disputes.
